Ford Amphitheatre (Hollywood, CA)
Prolific jazz drummer Billy Higgins performed on over 700 recordings throughout his career, playing alongside jazz luminaries like Ornette Coleman, Dexter Gordon and Stan Getz. For this special concert at the Ford, some of today’s notable jazz musicians pay homage to the local free jazz and hard bop legend, who also taught jazz at UCLA and cofounded L.A. cultural center The World Stage, which organized this celebratory event. Higgins’ profound contribution to the Los Angeles arts community lives on in the work of the musicians he instructed and inspired. Performers for this concert include former students and jazz notables Kamau Daaood, Carmen Lundy, Bennie Maupin, Patrice Rushen, Kamasi Washington and Hubert Laws.
