Smoke Prompts Emergency Landing of Air Canada Flight in Ottawa

Reports of suspected smoke in the cabin of Air Canada Flight 8953, en route to Toronto from Fredericton, prompted an emergency landing of the aircraft at the Ottawa airport on early Wednesday morning. Ottawa paramedic service were ready at the airport before the airplanes’ descent and attended the aircraft in response to the call made around 6 a.m. There were a total 69 passengers and four crew members on board Flight 8953.

According to the details provided by spokesman Franςois Côté, paramedics were ready at the airport when the flight landed and found that there were no injuries to anyone on the aircraft. According to the airline, the flight crew requested a priority landing and chose to quickly deplane passengers. Speaking on behalf of Jazz Aviation, i.e. a subsidiary of Air Canada, Debra Williams mentioned in an official statement that the “emergency vehicles met the aircraft upon arrival and confirmed there was no fire on board.” It was added that “we apologize to our passengers for this incident and inconvenience.” Soon after the airplane was evacuated, all passengers were moved to a terminal where they were booked on alternate flights.

According to the statement issued by The Ottawa Airport Authority, the plane was diverted to Ottawa and landed at around 6:30 a.m. Airport spokesperson, Krista Kealey, confirmed that “the incident from our perspective is resolved” and that “the air field is now open.” Whereas, Ottawa Fire Service also confirmed to have received a call around 6 a.m., but they were not needed on site.
