Calgary is anticipated to encounter a week full of snow after a blast of winter hit the region over the weekend. Calgary’s temperature dropped into winter deep-freeze mode, i.e. from a high of 13C on Saturday to -10C on Sunday, and it feels like -29C with the windchill on Monday.
According to the statement issued by lead meteorologist at Environment Canada, Jesse Wager, on Sunday “it’s definitely a lot colder today than it was yesterday and it’s going to stay that way for the better part of the week.” The disruptive weather has kept emergency officials and road crews busy as Calgary police encountered 306 collisions till midnight Sunday, out of which 66 involving injuries. In addition to that, the city’s roads department has also called in contractors to help deal with the wintery blast as crews spent the weekend salting and clearing major routes while also working on trouble spots including hills, ramps and bridge decks. Spokeswoman for the roads department, Anna Blaxley, mentioned that “we really wanted to ensure that we had a handle on this snow event,” said. “We had fairly good warning and we wanted to make sure we could give Calgarians the very best conditions possible given the weather.”
Environment Canada’s Wager alleged that up to 5 or 10 centimetres of snow is predicted to fall in Calgary on Sunday, and continue fall throughout the week. Wager stated that “once the heaviest snow moves out of the region, we can still expect to see scattered light flurries for the next couple of days.”
