San Gabriel Mission Playhouse (San Gabriel, CA)
Even in today’s increasingly interconnected world, musical ensemble Hauz Khas Connnection stands apart for the intricacy and dizzying number of its international influences. The band began when the South Korean government asked acclaimed jazz saxophonist Hyunpill Shin to create a musical collaboration that crossed genres and borders. Shin’s eclectic tastes took him to India where he found sarangi player Suhail Yusuf Khan and tabla player Vishal Nagar. Forming intense connection almost immediately, the three recorded ten tracks in one week, the basis of their first album Milaap (“Come Together” in Hindi). Now HKC plays its first stateside concert ever as a part of San Gabriel Mission Playhouse’s Global Flavors seminar.
