Both the houses of parliament were seen to be in a chaotic situation on Friday over the cartoon of B R Ambedkhar regarding the statement of Home Minister P Chidambaram over the Aircel-Maxis deal being included in one of the textbooks of the government. Session of both the houses had to be adjourned to ensure pace in the respective houses.
The issue was raised at the very beginning of the session of Lok Sabha by Thirumaa Valavan Thol belonging to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) who held placards in their hands and kept waving them throughout the session trying to gain attention of other members of the house claiming that the cartoon published in the government textbook of grade 11 is intended to be offensive in nature towards Mr. Ambedkar. As soon as the members started protesting, Shahnawaz Hussain and Yashwant Sinha of BJP alongside a few others stood up and protested that how a minister of the assembly could read his son’s statement in front of the entire Lok Sabha.
Opposition leader Sushma Sawaj also contributed to the ongoing controversy saying, “Instead of making a personal explanation, he read out a statement on behalf of his son and also invoked Jesus Christ. Why did the Chair allow the statement?”
Defending Mr. Chidambaram, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pawan Bansal commented that Chidambaram has every right to share whatever he seeks relevant while giving a personal statement and that there was nothing wrong with what he shared with Lok Sabha yesterday.
