A recent announcement declares that public elementary school teachers all across Ontario are setting up for yet another one-day political protest against the contracts recently imposed on teachers by Education Minister Laurel Broten.
The official statement released today, claims that the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (EFTO) declares that several teachers, early childhood educators, professional support personnel and education support personnel will be protesting across the province on Friday to record their objection against the use of Bill 115. EFTO president, Sam Hammond, mentioned in the statement that “the minister made a deliberate and provocative choice to wipe out the democratic rights of tens of thousands of educators rather than work towards a respectful solution.” So far the news does not mentions any estimate or assertion about how this protest will affect operation of Ontario-based elementary schools on Friday.
The notorious Bill 115, introduced almost four months ago, gives all controversial rights to the education minister of forcefully imposing new contracts on Ontario public school teachers, in case the local unions and school boards fail to agree on a mutual solution. Minister Broten declared on 3rd January that she will be using the powers inherited from Bill 115 for implementing a new teachers’ contract. Although, she did also mention that Ontario government bears intention of revoking Bill 115, otherwise known as the Putting Students First Act. In a previous poll of 46,000 EFTO members, a complete majority of 92% voted to take part in a one-day political protest last month if Minister Broten imposed contracts using the bill.
