The largest hospital of Newfoundland and Labrador has confirmed an extraordinary flow of patients with symptoms of influenza and flu-like diseases this year, while other private health care practitioners also reported a more than usual flood of patients. It was confirmed by the Eastern Health, that they have witnessed a “significant increase” in the number of patients visiting the Health Sciences Centre, along with other hospitals and clinics as well.
Usually, flu season is known to bring heavy traffic of patients to hospital, but this year’s flu season is extraordinarily early, while physicians also claim the virus to be spreading more than usual. Jerry Walsh had to bring his mother at the Health Sciences last week, about which he said that “there [are] just so many people in there.” Walsh further added that “I mean, they are doing the best they can, but they just don’t have the resources to actually do any more. There’s people out in the corridors, there’s people everywhere.” Although flu virus patients were dominant of all, there is also a rush of patients with colds and gastrointestinal bugs.
It was calculated and disclosed by The Public Health Agency of Canada that this year’s flu cases are mainly concentrated in areas of southern Ontario, parts of British Columbia, Manitoba and Newfoundland. Eastern Health announced on Wednesday that there has been almost 207 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza in its coverage area, while it also identified that majority of the infected patients have compromised immune systems and/or chronic diseases.
