The European Union warned India over breaking international law by banning Italy’s ambassador from travelling out of the country. India is trying to pressurize Italy over returning the two marines wanted in a murder case of Indian fishermen.

The Supreme Court of India temporarily barred Ambassador Daniele Mancini from leaving the country after Italy refused to return the marines to face trial in India. The two Italian marines – Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone – are accused of killing two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kerala in February 2012.

“Any limitations to the freedom of movement of the ambassador of Italy to India would be contrary to the international obligations established under this convention,” EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said.

“(Ashton) continues to hope that a mutually acceptable solution can be found through dialogue and in respect of international rules and encourages the parties to explore all avenues to that effect,” the statement said.

According to the EU, Indian court’s verdict to ban Italian ambassador from travelling strictly violated diplomatic immunity law. Earlier, the Supreme Court had allowed the marines to go home only for four weeks to take part in general elections. Later, Italy refused to send them back.

India maintains that the incident took place under Indian jurisdiction while Italy argues that the shooting took place in international waters. Italy’s refusal to send back the marines ignited the Indian parliament, putting pressure on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take decisive steps.
