The QEII Highway, south of Edmonton, has now been reopened after a stretched succession of multiple crashes that resulted in more than 100 people being injured, while a storm dumped as much as 25 centimetres of snow on Thursday. In consequence of the massive chain-reaction crashes, the highway that is the main route to connect Calgary and Edmonton was closed until late Thursday night. An estimate of 85 to 100 vehicles were hit during the sequential car crashes that took place near the town of Millet. Approximately 80 people were treated at the scene by EMS, while an additional number of 22 were shifted to nearby hospitals.

RCMP confirmed that one of the most seriously injured victims was a man, who was brutally hit by a semi-truck, while standing outside his vehicle after a collision. Witness claim that nearly 45 heavily damaged vehicles had to be towed to be removed from the highway. Latest reports assure that majority of the damaged vehicles have been cleared from the route, while it was warned, that even though the road is now open, it is still slippery.

RCMP Corp. Colette Zazulak alleged that people are going to file reports with RCMP detachments, investigators will hopefully get a better picture. Zazulak alleged that “which ones happened where, and what vehicles were involved,” and “from there, they’re going to determine whether it was just nature, in the sense of the conditions, or whether there are any charges to be laid or things like that.” One witness believes a lack of advance signage about the road closure may have caused some vehicles to go into the ditch.
