Local police confirmed on Friday that an Edmonton-area truck driver caused the bridge to collapse in Washington State on Thursday evening, resulting in two vehicles having sunk the river below. However, there were no casualties in the disaster, athough three people had to be rescued and shifted to a nearby hospital for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. All three have now been released.

Sgt. Kirk Rudeen, of the Washington State Patrol, revealed that a 41-year-old resident of Spruce Grove, Alta., William Scott, was driving a semi-truck which carried heavy load of steel at the time it struck one of the bridge’s girders. Even though Scott was able to cross the four-lane span, the bridge eventually collapsed behind him, sending the structure tumbling down 15 metres into the Skagit River. It was reported that rescuers immediately approached the scene and rescued three people. The officials declared the rescue to be a success on late Thursday. Skagit County Sheriff, Will Reichardt, stated that “we had heard rumours there might be more people in the water, we were able to dispel those rumours.” He explained that “we had divers out there that did not need to go in the water. We were able to be very assured that there’s nobody else in the water, so we have discontinued any rescue or search efforts.”

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee mentioned in a statement, that “due to some very deft and very on-the-spot rescue work by a great emergency response team, three people were removed from the Skagit River (and) taken to local hospitals. Our hearts are with them and their families, but we are very happy that it appears that there have not been fatalities this evening.”
