Melvin I. Alvarado (H/m, DOB: 5-7-88) and Jonathan Ariel Lopez-Torres (H/m, DOB: 2-16-92) are charged with capital murder in the 338th State District Court.

The victim, Shatavia Anderson, 14, of Houston, suffered a gunshot wound to the back and was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant W. Bush and Officer C. Sturdivant reported:

Officers responded to a call of a female down in a field. Police and fire department personnel arrived and discovered the female deceased with at least one gunshot wound.

Investigators learned Shatavia was last seen between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m. on Saturday when she was walked to the corner of Greens Road and Wayforest by a friend and a relative of the friend. Shatavia crossed Greens Road on Wayforest and walked alone to her apartment on Langwick. During that walk, she was confronted by an unknown suspect who shot and robbed her.

Further investigation led to the identification of Alvarado and Lopez-Torres as suspects in this case. Alvarado was the shooter. Both suspects confessed to their roles in the shooting and robbery.
