Police has confirmed that a man in his 40s, wearing nothing but a T-shirt, jeans and a hospital bracelet, was found dead on Tuesday morning in a bus shelter at Yonge and Dundas Sts. According to Toronto Paramedics, the man did not have any vital signs when he was rushed to the hospital.
Police were alerted about the situation at around 5:26 a.m., when a call reported a man lying down in the shelter at the intersection’s southwest corner. Police spokesperson Const. Jeniffer Sidhu confirmed that the man wasn’t moving at all when police found him. Sidhu explained that “he was immediately transported to hospital,” adding that “police drove the ambulance while paramedics worked on the man.” Whereas in a separate incident on Monday, a body was found in a truck at a shipping yard near Davenport Rd. and Lansdowne Ave.
Consequently, The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty issued a statement on Tuesday in response to the two deaths. OCAP criticized the city for failing to issuing an extreme cold weather alert so far, which would have opened the city’s warming centres for the homeless. OCAP’s statement says that “it is unacceptable for homeless people to be left to freeze to death outside,” adding that “the City of Toronto has the power to act immediately to address the homeless crisis and to prevent further deaths.” Police has refrained from releasing any information regarding the man found on Tuesday as they try to contact his next of kin.
