The Caretaker Governor, Matur Chut Dhuol, speaking during the swearing in ceremony urged the two commissioners to restore trust between communities and state government.
“Your mission is peace and to restore confidence of this state government, so that the communityunderstands that this is their government. There is some mistrust and misinformation in how the community views this government – we are to stand for their interest and your duties as commissioners are to promotepeace and reconciliation within such communities.”
Rumbek East County commissioner, Martin Matian Anyuonic aims to reduce the Reduce insecurity within his county.
“My first agenda is to do away with road ambushes. The second to reduce cattle raiding between Yirol West and Rumbek East and thirdly is bring peace and reconciliation.”
Rumbek East and Yirol West are locked into a cycle of cattle raids and counter attacks which have always left many dead.
Yirol West County commissioner, George Kuac Dhieu, assured the public of security.
“My concern is to secure highway roads so that people travel without obstructions. When we accept peace, I don’t think that our communities will disobey what we are going to do. I am sure that if we work together without favouritism, without nepotism, we shall bring peace between Yirol West and Rumbek East.”
Former Rumbek East County commissioner Madong William Mading resigned after deadly clashes erupted between the Gony and Thuyic clans that claimed 53 lives and wounded 156 others last December.
Martin Matian Anyuonic was then appointed Rumbek East County Commissioner immediately by the Caretaker Governor.
However, the appointment of the new Commissioner of Yirol West County has been received with many criticisms from the Rorkech Community claiming community imbalance in appointments of leaders in the County.
