A Singapore tourist named Vincent Toh was kidnapped in the Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula by the Bedouins living there who also had the record of abduction of several tourists including two American tourists who were captured on May 31. Toh’s kidnapping was the fifth kidnapping since February that Bedouins did for the same purpose.
In accordance with the police officers, the purpose of Bedouins for kidnapping these tourists was to demand for releasing their relatives including one of their tribesmen who were arrested for involvement in terrorist activities.
In coordination with the chiefs of tribes the security forces were successful to free the tourist. The source said “he was handed over to the security forces.”
The kidnappers released the tourist unharmed few hours later with the assistance of Egyptians authorities. The Singaporean tourist had been leading a group of 20 Singaporean tourists when the armed men intercepted them while traveling from Sinai to Cairo. On the release of Toh, one of the Singaporean tourist said he came after “efforts by the security forces in coordination with the chiefs of tribes.”
The two American tourists, who were previously kidnapped near the Red Sea resort of Dahab, were also released within 24 hours after they were captured.
Many Bedouins were severely penalized between 2004 and 2008 for their attack against the resorts on the Red Sea. They repeatedly attacked on the pipeline running through northern Sinai which supplies gas to Jordan and Israel.
There was a limited presence of the army in Sinai that has made the situation more difficult as a result of the demilitarization of the area under the 1979 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.
