In Danny Boyle’s £27 million production, the Queen played a starring role with Daniel Craig as James Bond. The appearance of the Queen in the pre-recorded film footage showed the pair appearing to skydive into the stadium and was one of the major attractions of the night.
The show-stealing instant eclipsed the Queen’s formal role to the night in which she opened the Games, telling the world: “I declare open the Games of London, celebrating the 30th Olympiad of the modern era.”
Audiences watched 007 in the movie scene, played by Daniel Craig, walking into Buckingham Palace surrounded by corgis to pick up the Queen while she was sitting at her writing desk. She welcomed him with the words “Good evening, Mr. Bond”, then the pair boarded a helicopter which flew across London to the stadium.
They reached down through a parachute to the ground, but in reality, at the last moment the Queen appeared in the arena to take her seat to cheers and applause.
The Queen was very happy, said the spokesperson, to get involved and the sequences, directed by Danny Boyle, were filmed in March and April this year. Previously the director said the Queen had “made herself more accessible than ever before”.
Buckingham Palace said, the scenes were filmed in the quadrangle, the Grand Entrance, the East Gallery, the Audience Room and the West Terrace. They even starred her own dogs, including 13-year-old Monty, formerly owned by the Queen Mother, nine-year-old Holly, and a third corgi, Willow.
