The federal government has make a generous announcement, asserting that it will bear up to 50 per cent of the decontamination costs in Lac-Mégantic, Que., which are now calculated to be at most of $95 million. In the announcement made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in the disaster-rigged town on Thursday, he mentioned that according to estimates considered by Quebec government the clean-up costs in light of the devastating disaster caused by train derailment in the small of Quebec town in July is at $190 million. International Development Minister and the MP for Mégantic-L’Érable, Christian Paradis, and Lac-Mégantic Mayor, Colette Roy-Laroche, are both anticipated to accompany PM Harper during the announcement.

In another announcement made on Wednesday, Transport Minister Lisa Raitt declared that the federal government has made it compulsory for railway companies to keep informing the communities about their trains that carry dangerous goods through their area. Canadian Class 1 railway companies are now compelled to pass on that information every three months, while other companies are allowed to do so at the end of each year.

The devastating incident caused in Lac-Mégantic due to derailment of train carrying 72 tankers full of crude oil resulted in a series of explosions that killed 47 people and ripped the small community apart. The timing of Harper’s announcement in Lac-Mégantic will make it difficult for the prime minister to be back in Ottawa for question period at 2:30 p.m.
