Britain’s former BBC radio presenter DJ Dave Lee Travis will be trialed over 13 counts of indecent assault and one of sexual assault.at Southwalk Crown Court in London on Tuesday.
One of the renowned DJ of 1970s and 1980s, whose real name is David Patrick Griffin, from Buckinghamshire, is accused of assaulting 11 women, out of all one was only 15 at the time of incident. He denies all the allegations and charges.
The 68-year-old was first arrested last November and faces 13 counts on indecent assault dating between 1976 and 2003, and one count on sexual assault in 2008.
Mr. Travis is one among 14 ageing celebrities and show business figures to be accused of sex offences in an investigation sparked by revelations that the late BBC TV host Jimmy Savile was a prolific child sex abuser.
The crown’s case began as prosecutor Miranda Moore QC told that women had come forward from “all parts of the United Kingdom” with similar allegations against Mr. Travis.
She has told the court that Mr. Travis carried out a series of assaults which were “sexual in nature” while working as a disc jockey, acting in pantomimes and even at the opening of a hospital radio station.
The court hears that the accused was an “opportunist” who used to target young women and indecently assaulted a 19-year-old during a recording of Top of the Pops.
Ms. Moore has said: “The offences vary in gravity”.
“All are sexual in nature, involving unwanted contact by this defendant on much younger women, both over clothing and under clothing.”
The trial is expected to continue for six weeks.
