LATW performs Matt Pelfrey’s adaptation of John Ball’s sizzling 1965 noir thriller before departing on a national tour. They call him Mr. Tibbs, and he happens to be a black police detective passing through a small Alabama town in 1962, when he’s arrested for a white man’s murder. His investigation leads to a twisty mystery in the racially-charged community, where he ultimately wins the begrudging respect of the town’s bigoted police chief. This adaptation is based on John Ball’s famed 1965 novel, which led to the 1967 movie starring Sidney Poitier, winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture … which led to the long-running TV series, winner of a Best Actor Emmy for its star Carroll O’Connor. Now see it live on stage.
