A London court has sentenced a terrorist, 27-year-old Imran Khawaja from Southall, for twelve years after he was declared dead by a the terrorist organization as a cover for his return to Britain from Syria. The court was shown pictures of Khawaja carrying an Islamic State banner and holding the severed head of a Syrian government soldier.

Khawaja was arrested at Dover after spending months at a Syrian terrorist training camp and being hailed a hero by the terrorist group, Rayat al-Tawheed, which had falsely announced his death. According to the verdict passed by Justice Jeremy Baker at Woolwich Crown Court, the cover story of Khawaja’s death evidently proves that Khawaja was “an individual of significance within that organisation which anticipated that you would remain an active member after your return to the UK.” Last month, Khawaja pled guilty to preparing for acts of terrorism, attending a terrorist training camp, receiving weapons training and possessing a firearm for terrorist use. The court was told that he became known as the “Andrex jihadi” for asking his friends to send him items including toilet roll while he was in Syria.

According to Justice Jeremy, regardless of the acts of terrorism by Khawaja were to be committed in the UK or in Syria, “you do pose a significant risk to members of the public of serious harm.” Jeremy stated that Khawaja should at least serve a minimum of eight years behind bars and then have an extended period on license to reflect his dangerousness.
