This Black History Month, Historica Canada is thrilled to host a special evening of storytelling and music in celebration of the spirit of Black women in Canada. In February, we are celebrating the remarkable achievements of Black women as they create and cultivate change in communities across the country. Join us as some of Canada’s most beloved local luminaries and leaders share stories about the Black women who have inspired them. On this unforgettable evening of cocktails, canapés and powerful storytelling, presenters will regale us with personal anecdotes of heroes and mentors to historical accounts honouring the rich legacy of crusaders for change in this country.
Hosted by CTV’s Marci Ien, the night will feature a tour de force of Black Canadians who will each share a story:
Jully Black – Canada’s Queen of R&B
Cameron Bailey – Artistic Director, TIFF
Trey Anthony – Executive Producer, Da Kink in my Hair
d’bi young anitafrika – Canadian Poet of Honour
Kandyse McClure – Actress, Battlestar Galactica
Cauchy Muamba – Edmonton Eskimos, Canadian Football League
Tiffany Ford – TDSB Trustee, Ward 4
Historica Canada is proud to share a new Heritage Minute celebrating a Canadian civil rights icon at this event. Businesswoman Viola Desmond courageously fought racial segregation in Nova Scotia in the 1940s after she was arrested while sitting in a movie theatre section reserved for white patrons. Though her legal challenge was unsuccessful, the case became a catalyst for change. She was posthumously pardoned in 2010 by Nova Scotia Lieutenant-Governor Mayann Francis.
