On Thursday, Ontario’s Liberals were attacked as the party’s opponents looked to light some fire on the final stretch of the provincial election campaign. NDP kept attacking Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty when his party unexpectedly announced to call off an unpopular plan to construct a gas-fired power plant in Mississauga – a decision both the NDP and Progressive Conservatives have criticized.
Democrat Andrea Horwath looked into the matter and demanded an investigation on closure of the plant. In an open letter, she said it is vital to know what impact the decision to impede construction on the site will have on taxpayers.
She said an inquiry was essential since the Liberals would not open the cost to cancel the plans, and because the Liberals did something very similar in Oakville last year.
Horwath said: “We’ve been asking for (the cost) but we haven’t been getting it. That’s the problem.”
While McGuinty said that he would bring in a tax credit for home renovations 15 months earlier than the Liberals had designed, in the hope that it would bring employment ahead of a financial fall.
He said: “It will take effect on Oct. 1, at a time that will inspire, I believe, greater confidence in the people of Ontario and help create better jobs.”
