In his message during the ten WES counties’ tour in December last year, Governor Bangasi Bakosoro prioritized Agriculture, Health and Education as the key areas his government is focusing on.
Two weeks ago the WES Government passed a resolution that calls for half day working on Fridays so that civil servants and other government employees would focus on improving the agricultural sector.
While speaking in the opening session, the newly appointed commissioner of Yambio county Mr. John Kuze welcomed the delegation from the National Ministry of Agriculture.
The commissioner urged all the citizens to take agriculture seriously as he further warned that strong measures may be taken against those who may not stand by the policies the government is taking to improve the livelihoods of the population in the State.
Kuze who was appointed as the commissioner of Yambio County earlier this month lauded the turn up of the citizens to the public rally.
The WES minister of agriculture explained that the gathering is to tackle essential issues on food security, livelihoods and South Sudan at large. “WES is assumed to be the bread basket of the nation due to the favourable climate and fertile soils that can support large scale farming,” he said.
After the subsequent South Sudan’s decision to stop the oil production, the minister stressed that the country should engage in to other economic activities to improve the economy.
Dr. Betty Achan Ogwaro, the National Minister of Agriculture said she was happy to select WES as the venue for a workshop that was attended by all the ten states’ Ministers of Agriculture in order to strategise on how to support the national government that is unable to raise all the money needed in producing more food.
Dr. Achan reiterated the advantages WES has, being the bread basket of South Sudan but she stressed that all South Sudanese need to practice agriculture and be able to produce enough for importing to other nations hence improve the national revenue.
She urged the youths to always participate in developmental activities especially farming because they are energetic and to also rally behind the government to learn more since they are expected to soon take the leadership mantle come 2014.
Dr. Achan finally urged all the South Sudanese to always be self reliant and not to depend on international community especially at this critical time. The national minister then urged all women to go back to school in order to be literate because “educating a woman is educating the nation.”
