Some guys can’t catch a break: Witness the “Man,” the lead character in 7 Stories, a play by Morris Panych. At the beginning of the play, the Man steps out onto the ledge of a tall building, contemplating ending his own life. He is quickly noticed by the inhabitants of the adjacent seventh story, although their reactions to his presence are far from expected. In fact, most of them seem more worried about their own lives than the imperiled life of the Man. Often compared to the work of Tom Stoppard, this funny, consistently surprising play literally offers “windows” into the lives of several characters, many of whom turn out to be far more tragic than one man actually trying to kill himself. Bruce Gray directs this beloved work by the prolific Panych, whose play Vigil was recently produced at the Mark Taper Forum to rave reviews.
