The 17th annual protest against police brutality took place in Montreal, overall resulting in more than 250 people being arrested and taken in police custody via city buses and police vehicles. Montreal police revealed that almost all of the protestors were taken in police custody due to the municipal bylaw P-6, which depicts that it is illegal to cover one’s face during a protest and also failing to present a convincing itinerary to the authorities upon request during a protest. Later a tweet added that several arrests made by authorities were due to breach of peace.
A minimum of 150 people were allowed to quit the protest after paying a $637 fine in lieu of their participation in an illegal event. However, it is not yet confirmed by the Montreal police that exactly how many arrests were made by the authorities, which were seen validating the identities of almost 100 people grouped on the corner of Sainte-Catherine and Sainte-Élisabeth streets. Additionally, a fraction of police officers were always busy rounding up groups of protestors and carrying out mass arrests throughout the duration of the march. Hence, majorities formed smaller groups as police ordered them to disperse since the protest was declared illegal because organizers failed to provide a valid itinerary to the authorities.
Initially protesters convened on the corner of Saint-Urbain and Ontario streets near police headquarters at around 4 p.m. A spokesperson of the Montreal police, Laurent Gingras, revealed that two police officers had to be taken to the hospital during the incident, one of whom suffered two broken teeth.
