The law enforcement agencies of Quebec have successfully countered a classy attempt of prison escape, as police tracked all escapees and triumphantly arrested all those responsible for the daring helicopter escape.
Authorities confirmed that two suspects, one of whom had biker-gang affiliations, hijacked a helicopter as it lifted off from a detention centre in St-Jérôme, Que., 60 kilometres northwest of Montreal, on Sunday afternoon, starting off an intense manhunt by land and air. The provincial police was informed of the escape at 2:20 on Sunday afternoon, while alarmed prison guards witnessed the helicopter fly away with two of their high-security prisoners. It was investigated that the helicopter had been lent by a tour company in Mont-Tremblant, name Heli-Tremblant, to two men posed as tourists to hire the chopper. Just as the helicopter lifted off the ground, the suspects pointed a gun at the pilot and commandeered him to fly to St-Jérôme. Circling the prison premises, the hijackers airlifted the inmates with use of cables and ropes. Both fugitives were reportedly injured during the escape.
Provincial police confirmed the identity of both fugitives to be 36-years-old Benjamin Hudon-Barbeau and 33-years-old Danny Provençal. Shockingly enough, a man claiming to be Mr. Hudon-Barbeau contacted Quebec media outlets, including TVA and Montreal radio station 98.5 FM, warning “It will end badly.” The radio station’s website states that the man mentioned that “I’ll kill myself, I’m 36 years old, I was told that I would die in prison.” The fugitive alleged that he was shot in the leg during the escape.
