Walnut Contemporary is pleased to invite you to the opening of Breathing Space, an exhibition of new paintings by senior Canadian artist, Milly Ristvedt. This exhibition marks a departure from works of the past two decades in which variations of the orthogonal grid played the supporting role for colours ability to express ideas and states of mind. The expressive potential of colour within abstract painting continues to be the focus of my work. The new works consist of thin vertical washes of colour on canvas. Their size and verticality speak to both mind and body. I intend them as visual meditations on the human condition, and the possibility of hope. (MR, February, 2013.) Now based in Tamworth, Ontario, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University) before moving to Toronto, in 1964, where she exhibited with the Carmen Lamanna Gallery. She shared studio space with Jack Bush, who was an inspiration and friend to many younger painters at the time, including David Bolduc, Paul Fournier, and Kay Graham. Since the late 1960s to the present, Ristvedts work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, in private galleries including Klonaridis, Inc. Toronto; David Mirvish Gallery, Toronto; Galerie Jolliet, Quebec; and Gallery 128, NYC, and included in exhibitions in many public galleries in Canada and abroad. Her paintings are found in national and international collections, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada Council Art Bank, Musee dArt Contemporain, Montreal, Foreign Affairs Canada, and Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
