Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Haq in Kot Bhalwal Jail has been fatally attacked by fellow inmates on Friday. The prisoner is in critical condition and Pakistan has sought immediate consular access to him.
“Pakistan High Commission has shown serious concern. It has taken up with Ministry of External Affairs the attack on Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah in Kot Bhalwal Jail in Jammu,” the Press attaché in the High Commission said.
Pakistan High Commission has also demanded detailed information on the incident along with complete assurance that all the other Pakistani inmates have been provided high level security.
“We are not satisfied with the security provided. We could have avoided an incident such as this,” Pakistan High Commission spokesperson Mazoor Memon said.
The incident took place a day after Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh died in Lahore. Sarabjit was attacked by his fellow inmates last Friday and succumbed to his injuries a week later. He was on a death row after being convicted of involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Pakistan in 1990.
Reportedly, the Union Home Ministry has directed all the states to enhance security of 220 Pakistani prisoners lodged in their respective jails after the attack in Lahore prison.
“Sarabjit died, Sanaullah will not die. There is tremendous anger over Sarabjit. So some prisoners will be attacked, not justifying it. We are controlling our anger as best as we can,” National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah said.
