Almost a week after a top local Mountie defended the actions of RCMP as it seized all unlocked guns from flooded High River, Alta., the RCMP commissioner has ordered to conduct an investigation of the act. The request made by RCMP Commissioner, Bob Paulson, has prompted RCMP’s own watchdog to investigate police actions in the aftermath of flooding, when High River was evacuated for almost nine days. It is alleged that the RCMP searched each home, and said they seized “several hundred” guns that were not locked away.

Even though the RCMP was planning to return all legal guns, the actions were highly condemned by the Prime Minister’s Office, which mentioned in a statement that “the RCMP should focus on more important tasks such as protecting lives and private property.” Consequently, Mr. Paulson made the decision of acquiring a warrant to launch an investigation, which was made requested through a letter addressed to the independent Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP on Friday. He wrote in the letter that “while I am very proud of the heroic response of our members and employees (many of whom were personally impacted) in helping the community stay safe during this disaster, I am quite concerned by the sharp criticism that has arisen in the media with respect to the gun seizures from evacuated homes.”

Mr. Paulson asked commission chair Ian McPhail to “investigate our actions in High River to assess if they were well founded, reasonably executed and in accordance with our policies.” In response, to Paulson’s letter, Mr. McPhail announced that he’ll “examine whether the [RCMP] members’ actions complied with all appropriate policies, procedures, guidelines and statutory requirements.”
