Authorities have confirmed that The Bluenose II test drive that was scheduled to take place from Lunenburg harbour this morning has been postponed since the province was not able to acquire a certificate required to leave the dock from the United States. A spokesperson for the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, Glenn Friel, revealed that the province was not able to receive the necessary “permission to leave dock” certificate that was supposed to be issued by the American Bureau of Shipping.
The renowned schooner is being built to ABS standards. According to Friel, the department plans to soon find out why the certificate was withheld. According to an announcement by the province on Monday afternoon, the rebuilt Bluenose II was anticipated to leave the Lunenburg Foundry Wharf at about 9 a.m. today, conditional to the weather situation. The test aimed to evaluate how the ship’s systems performed when the vessel is moving in light of concerns that the rudder is too heavy.
Friel elucidated that this test drive is believed to help in determining whether or not the ship is ready for a full sea trial, which is the final step in ensuring the ship is seaworthy. During the test drive, the boat was not planned to be under sail but in fact was going to be accompanied by other boats which would have observed what was happening and offered any support if needed. The test was expected to last almost two-and-a-half hours.
