Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop has openly suggested Ontario’s Tories to abandon the far-right policies proposed by former leader Tim Hudak and incline more towards the centre of the political spectrum. Dunlop alleged that “you can be the Bill Davis kind of a right, where you are just slightly right, and he managed to stay 14 years as premier,” adding that “or you can go to what Tim was trying to do, which was go very far to the right when we didn’t need to be there at all.”
During a blunt interview this week, Dunlop admitted that the voters “didn’t have faith in Tim, they didn’t trust him.” He elucidated that “they just did not want to go down that road in case it made the problems even worse.” While the Ontario Liberals gear themselves up to rebuild after a crushing loss, Dunlop suggested the Tories should offer a more moderate platform that reflects the changing political scene.
Mr. Dunlop explained that “the whole province is shifting more and more to the left all the time, so I think the Bill Davis kind of politics would fit in perfectly today to go in that direction.” He added that “we have to pay off bills, but everybody that’s a citizen deserves the same kind of equal attention and you can’t isolate any specific group, so I think Bill Davis politics would probably work better today than it worked when Bill Davis was there.” Furthermore, Dunlop warned that it would be “political suicide” for the party to rush in choosing a new leader.
