In the band he’s called “Bud,” but there’s no mistaking the leader singer of the Boxmasters: It’s Hollywood star Billy Bob Thornton. And while some wondered whether the rockabilly band was nothing more than a vanity project for the Oscar winner, the group’s longevity, to say nothing of its increasing critical acclaim, has long since silenced critics. Fashioned somewhat after a 1960s-era mod band gone country, the Boxmasters’ upbeat rhythms and infectious arrangements are a fusion of the Beatles, the Stones, Kinks, and the Animals with Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Roy Acuff and Hank Williams. Now, just in time for the release of their latest album, Somewhere Down the Road, the boys get ready to rock The Canyon.
