tory mp wollaston defects from brexit to eu-remain campaignA senior Tory MP who supported Brexit, Sarah Wollaston, has announced to have changed her mind and now rallied behind the Remain campaign with just two weeks to go in the referendum. Former GP turned chairwoman of the Commons health committee, Wollaston, also criticized the Vote Leave campaign for using an ‘untrue’ claim about the NHS and confessed that she would feel a sense of ‘sadness and loss’ if Britain voted for Brexit.

While expressing her change of heart today, Wollaston stated that she had genuinely changed her mind over the course of the campaign and one of the reasons behind that was Vote Leave’s central claim Brexit would mean Britain gets back £350million a week in EU fees. She mentioned in her blog, “My postal vote sits unopened in the kitchen. Far from tearing it open to do my bit for Brexit, I have been imagining how it would feel to wake up to that result on June 24.” She added that “it would not be elation or freedom but a profound sense that something had been lost and guilt too if my vote had contributed to the turmoil ahead.”

Dr Wollaston highlighted that Vote Leave’s remarks about NHS are misleading and explained that “I think right from the outset there are people within the Leave campaign who acknowledge in private that they know this is not true, but what they are trying to encourage is a discussion about the amount.” She alleged that “Well, this is a kind of post-truth politics. Having come into public life complaining about open and honest data, I can’t step foot on a battlebus or distribute a leaflet with information that I know to be untrue. And I’ve told them that.”
