Sikkim earthquake has killed 78 people. The landslides continue in many places and road links between the state and the rest of the country are cut off, the sources reported.
The government officials said that there may be an increase in the death toll. This has been predicted because rescue teams were unable to reach some internal north Sikkim areas on account of repeated landslides.
"The death toll has gone up to 78 with few bodies recovered from rubbles in north Sikkim, while few succumbed to injuries in hospitals," an official said.
According to the overnight reports there were 68 deaths. There had been heavy rains in the area which caused landslides in a number of places. Owing to landslides the main lifeline National Highway 31-A had been blocked. This road was much needed for rescue purposes. Reconstruction of the roads is in the process and it is likely that the traffic will resume on highway after a few days.
P Chidambaram, the Home Minister, will reach here later in the day to review the damage caused by Sunday’s massive earthquake.
The home minister, P Chidambaram, will meet the injured at the hospital. He is also scheduled for a meeting with the Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling. After that he will go for an aerial survey of the worst-hit north Sikkim.
An update also said that at least 2,000 houses have been collapsed and more than 100,000 houses are damaged by the massive earthquake.
