A 60 year old building collapsed in the Walled City of Old Delhi which killed 7 people and left 22 injured.

The “Katra Data Ram ki Haveli”, a three story building, was located in Chandni Mahal area near the Jama Masjid.

“Katra refers to a wing of tradesmen and craftsmen belonging to the same trade usually living and working together. The Haveli (building) was more than 60-years-old,” a 55-year-old Sharfaqt told the media.

The cause of the building collapse is still in the process of being discovered.

The Local MLA, Shoaib iqbal said that “an illegal construction may have caused the building collapse” as there was construction on the next door.

“The building, number 833, was heritage building, next to the police station. I had called the Station House Master (SHO) this Sunday telling him that there is illegal construction going on. Unfortunately, due to digging, the building has collapsed leading to 20-25 people trapped,” Iqbal said.

According to the local people, Data Ram Panna Lal owned the building who used to run his business in the 1,000 square yard plot.
