Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has vowed that Canada will proceed with its environmental policies, including the policy to cut carbon emissions, regardless of any U.S. retreat from anti-climate-change measures under president-elect Donald Trump. According to Trudeau, even though Canada currently spends almost all its energy exports to the United States, it has to structure its economy for the long term rather than reacting hastily to moves by Washington under changing governments.

Addressing the Calgary business audience at Calgary Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Trudeau faced many business leaders in the city who expressed concern that carbon taxes will make the sector less competitive than the United States. In his remarks on Monday, Trudeau told a crowd of almost 1,300 that “we know that this is the way the world is going, and if the United States wants to take a step back from it, quite frankly, I think we should look at that as an extraordinary opportunity for Canada and for Canadians, an opportunity to draw in investors who are focused on where the profits and the opportunities are going to be 10 years from now, 20 years from now.”

In addition to that, Mr. Trudeau welcomed the incoming Republican president’s intention to approve the Keystone XL pipeline from Alberta to the southern United States. The project was put down by the outgoing President Barack Obama last year as he said it would undercut the fight against climate change.
