The Torit County Commissioner, Mr. Felix Otuduha Siro is glad that the previous ban of outlawed alcoholic drinks in Torit town, the State headquarters highly contributed to the just concluded peaceful holiday season.
Otuduha confirmed that there were no major incidences except for two people who murdered their fathers in Torit town and Hiyala Payam of Torit respectively but this happened after Christmas celebration. One lady also attempted to commit suicide but was rescued in Torit town.
The Commissioner revealed that shortly after the formation of the Government in May 2010, the State Council of Ministers initiated a ‘Peace and Justice Mission’, a State Government mission whose major objective was to deal with a number of issues not limited to petty crimes, public disorder, cattle raids, banditry, and highway robberies.
Authorities disclosed that the move followed orders passed by the State parliament of Eastern Equatoria earlier and implemented by the executive body.
In October 2011, over 4,000 cartons of different types of illegal alcohol drinks including tiger gins, coffee spirit and empire brands were confiscated from Omoliha market in Torit town following a thorough search by security personnel comprising of police, wildlife, civil defend (also known as fire brigade), prison warders and the Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA) division 2.
The search was co-led by the acting Governor, Mr. Nartisio Loluke Manir, the host Commissioner of Torit Mr. Felix Otuduha Siro and SPLA’s acting commander in EES.
Mr. Otuduha also revealed that the other reason for security improvement was due to the State Government’s consistency in involving the youths, community leaders, elders and women, among others.
However, he noted that reluctance to continue with the effort will make the crime resume soon but he assured the public that his administration in collaboration with State, Payams and Bomas authorities will not give up.
The Commissioner underscored the importance of coordination and effective communication at all levels should the County and the State want stability and better service delivery.
