21-year-old Canadian defeats world no. 10 Almagro to reach his third career ATP final
Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) has reached the championship match of his first tournament of 2012 at the Aircel Chennai Open in Chennai, India, an ATP World Tour 250 event.
The 21-year-old Canadian earned a spot in his third career ATP final on Saturday thanks to his first Top 10 victory of the new tennis season, a 6-4, 6-4 win over world no. 10 Nicolas Almagro of Spain. Raonic was dominant on serve throughout the match, hitting 17 aces and losing just four points when his first serve went in. He saved three break points while serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set and finished the first set serving at 92 percent.
Raonic has a 1-1 record in ATP World Tour finals, winning his first ATP title in San Jose last March and finishing as the runner up to Andy Roddick in Memphis the following week.
In Sunday’s final, Raonic, seeded fourth in the tournament and ranked no. 31 in the world, will meet the winner of the second semifinal contest between world no. 9 Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia and Japanese qualifier Go Soeda.
