During his assessment tour to Jonglei’s conflict hit areas of Akobo and Pibor Counties last Friday the British Ambassador to South Sudan Mr. Alastair McPhail said that the solution to Jonglei conflict lairs with the governments of Jonglei and the National government.
Ambassador McPhail who was accompanied to the affected areas by the Jonglei State Governor Hon. Koul Manyang Juuk, high level State delegation and important security figures at the State; was worried by the huge presence of weapons in the hands of civil population but reputed that his country has been helping Jonglei in her conflict time in humanitarian basis, he also added that, if any assistance is needed politically then his country can also assist.
The British diplomat asked the people of Jonglei to resolve their differences in a peaceful manner and disarm peacefully, “am here to show the British presence, not just sitting in Juba to read news papers and watch the evens on television,” the Ambassador said.
The tour was also the first for the Jonglei State Governor to the affected areas since the State erupted in to internal conflicts in December 2011, the Vice President of the Republic rushed to the area in December while governor Koul and his State cabinets remained in Bor, the State capital.
Upon his return from the conflict hit areas, the Governor termed the situation in Jonglei as ‘warring situation’ “the State is at war,” he said; Koul emphasized that humanitarian aid was urgently needed in these areas since all harvests were burnt down.
Koul was hopeful that Jonglei will soon enjoy peace if roads connecting the State were constructed as promised by the President of the Republic and general disarmament is curried out, the Governor confirmed the disarmament process will commence by the end of this month.
