The defence team of the suspended chief of Police Bheki Cele was given a warning on Monday on producing non-productive evidence and wasting the time of court.

The court warned that the evidence submitted by the defence council has proved to be not relevant or related to the case several times before which is only wasting the time of court and nothing else. Vincent Maleka, the lawyer said, “We will avoid that general tendency, where you promise much in opening statement, but deliver less”.

The court responded on the statement given by the defence council at the beginning of session that they will produce more evidence proving Cele to be corrupt. The defence team had earlier submitted a written statement of the ex-deputy national commissioner and the head of police procurement Hamilton Hlela who said that Cele had given him direct orders to lease the two buildings in question in Durban and Pretoria.

In response to the submitted statement by Hamilton, Maleka said that if that is what the defence was depending on to sway the case in their favor, they will have to be disappointed as it doesn’t prove any of the allegations.

He further said, “We have carefully considered and analyzed the statement by General Hlela. Nothing comes to establish claims of corruption. His statement does not prove that. We will debate that statement. We hope you won’t avoid the essence of the questions.”
