The South Sudanese who have been living in Kosti in Khartoum for thirteen months began arriving in Juba yesterday.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is facilitating the repatriation of 12,000 returnees with the South Sudanese government transporting the returnee’s luggage.

“Today the repatriation of 12,000 people who are still stranded in Kosti has started with 164 people. IOM targets to airlift 800 to 1,000 returnees daily and we aim at completing the exercise at the end of this month”, said IOM Head of Mission Vincent Houver.

“They will be returning gradually over the next two weeks. With time we will increase the flights to six times per day. The returnees will camp at a transit point as they wait for their luggage before being dispatched to their different states”, added Houver.

The South Sudanese government expressed gratitude for efforts by the different partners in ensuring the successful repatriation of the South Sudanese from Sudan.

“We are very happy and the President is also happy that at least the first batch of South Sudanese has arrived safely, the South Sudanese Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Joseph Lual told the press at the airport.

“The Government of South Sudan thanks all people in Khartoum, the IOM and all the UN agencies who participated in making it possible for our people in Kosti to be repatriated successfully in this manner,” he added.

IOM estimates that at least 500,000 South Sudanese are still living in different states in Sudan.

This repatriation process came following the Sudanese government’s directive early this month that ordered the evacuation of South Sudanese nationals within a week.
