The Malaysian Bar has informed the former Inspector-General of Police Tun Hanif Omar that they were ready to engage with the panel. The Bar was expected to meet the independent advisory panel on the Bersih 3.0 rally despite their preliminary misgivings over the leadership of the panel.
The appointments were turned down by the two members, Petronas corporate affairs senior general manager Datuk Medan Abdullah and Former Borneo chief judge Tan Sri Steve Shim, of the independent advisory panel on the Bersih 3.0 rally. They gave reasons for their backing out of the Bersih inquiry panel politely that they were facing health issues and had work commitments. Tun Hanif Omar, the Panel chairman said the administration will assign their replacements as soon as possible.
Hanif said in a press conference after chairing a panel meeting on Monday, "It's up to them. Even after they said I should not lead the panel, they now said they are willing to meet". "While the council does not support my appointment as chairman, it is nevertheless open to meeting. We will listen to its side of the story as well," he added.
According to Hanif’s statements, the panel was shown a 40-minute video clip of the events from different viewpoints by the police before the rally. He articulated, "We understand that the police have 43 video clips containing 73 hours of footage of the rally. We will not view all of them but will request for the clips which we feel are necessary".
He also said that panel’s work would not copy the Suhakam’s (Malaysian Human Rights Commission) inquiry. "Suhakam's terms of reference focus solely on abuse of human rights”, "Our terms of reference are the 10 points that we announced earlier, and covers a wider inquiry, we are not limited to just human rights violations," he added.
