Air India’s existing pilots are threatened by the Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh’s decision to hire more pilots on Wednesday. They believed the crash-strapped national carrier would not be able to afford to pay high salaries to the new workforce because the company was facing a severe financial crisis.

The pilots, who were in their uniforms, protested at the Jantar Mantar and gathered at the Parliament House but they were prevented by the Indian Police to march further. The IPG also participated in a similar march in Mumbai.

The minister said that Air India would be hiring new pilots and accomplishing the training program that was taking place to train the 90 trainees it already had.

The purpose of hiring about 100 more pilots in the next few months was to expand Air India’s network. The majority of them would be co-pilots of the 400-odd pilots who have been on strike for a month now.

He made it clear on Wednesday saying “strike is over for us as the striking pilots have refused to accept the Dharmadhikari committee report, which is part of the airline’s turnaround plan and I don’t think there is any point in their coming back”.

He said, “If the terminated pilots want to come back, they will have to apply afresh once the airline advertises”, which would nearly close the doors for the striking pilots. A total of 101 sacked pilots were asked to apply afresh who could be replaced by the new recruits.

The minister said that 90 of the pilots were undergoing the training session that would be available in August for flying.
