In recent years, Asian and Eastern European countries have shown the dominance in weightlifting and the drift continued in the last Olympic Games.
The best force at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games was home team China, which won eight of the 15 gold medals with a clear difference.
Vietnam's Hoàng Anh Tuấn won his country's single medal of the 2008 Games with silver in the men's 56kg, whereas Kazakhstan, Thailand and North Korea also manage to pick gold medals in the last Olympics.
Now again Chinese are leading the show as China's Wang Mingjuan made a 10-year unbeaten international record to win gold in the first women's weightlifting event of the London Games, giving the Chinese female team an ideal start to defend their four Olympic titles.
Wang, only 26, eased to victory in the 48-kilogram weight division, elating a collective total of 205kgs to the delight of the strong Chinese group in the 6,000-seat Excel ground.
Lifting the heaviest weight in both styles of lift – the explosive one-stage snatch and the two-stage clean and jerk – Wang lifted a total of 8kg more than silver-medal winner Hiromi Miyake from Japan.
