Promenade Playhouse (Santa Monica, CA)

Promenade Playhouse, in collaboration with La Fabbrica dello Spettacolo from Milan, presents the U.S. premiere of LORCAbaret, an “expressionist variety show” inspired by the poetry and writing of Federico Garcia Lorca during his trip to America in 1929. In America, Lorca found a world of freedom that was unknown in Spain at that time. In America, he was free to embrace his sexuality and live openly after living under a dictatorship in Spain. At his last stop in Cuba, he spent most evenings at the Alhambra, a theater for men where works of political satire shared the bill with bawdy burlesques. LORCAbaret is created to be an Alhambra-style variety show, inspired the life of Lorca. This unique blend of play, performance art and poetry evokes the poet’s state of mind in America as well as the racial, sexual, social, and economic oppression at home that led to his tragic death.
