An obscene sexual assault incident of an aboriginal woman in northwestern Ontario, which is discovered to be a hate crime, has further worsened the discriminatory feelings possessed by the protestors and demonstrators of first nations all over Canada.

This Wednesday, a candlelight vigil was organized at a reserve adjacent to Thunder Bay to pray for better health of the female victims. The victim’s name is being kept a secret, while police states that she was assaulted, strangled and left for dead by two assaulters, who uttered racial slogans and condemned rights of first nations people. This assault was committed at a very crucial time as the entire native community, headed by its leaders, are demanding Harper to meet with Chief Spence, supported by the Idle No More movement. Now this outlet is also demanding a public inquiry to launch a complete investigation of violence against women, as the movement continues demonstrations like flash mob dances and blockades across the country .

Furthermore, the movement has called for a national day of action on Jan. 16, which will also underline the critical hunger strike being observed by Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence to meet PM Harper. The president of Native Women’s Association of Canada, Michéle Audette, asserts that the incident in Ontario was not an isolated incident. She highlighted that at least 600 aboriginal women and girls are missing or murdered in Canada within the past two decades, though native leaders allege that number to be in thousands. Michéle mentioned during a telephone interview on Wednesday that “It is systemic discrimination.”
