Mark Abraham, a Medical Officer in Charge of the said many women die during delivery in the hospital unnecessarily due to lack of blood bank in the hospital.
“In most cases women die in Malakal Teaching Hospital due to too much bleeding that leads to loss of blood in the woman and because we don’t have that service here, the woman would easily die if the lost blood is not replaced immediately,” Abraham said.
He said death of bleeding during the delivery is the leading factor in the department of maternity, adding it has “caused lives of women.”
Dr Abraham said that anaemia which is the shortage of blood has contributed negatively in the issue.
Anaemia meaning ‘lack of blood’ is a decrease in number of red blood cells (RBCs) or less than the normal quantity of haemoglobin in the blood.
“We have records of death that occur here due to anaemia from time to time,” Abraham said.
Dr Abraham said other death records during delivery are found on young ladies who have never given birth before because they have narrow uterus to release the baby.
“Because of long distances, some women take time to reach the hospital or health centres with labour. In this case with young woman who have very narrow uterus some complications may occur and can lead to death,” Dr Abraham said.
Abraham added that most of the time uneasy deliveries result into death of babies immediately.
“Babies born by mothers with narrow uterus are unfortunately delivered dead, if the labour process has taken long and brought late to the health centre. The matter here is about time some women arrive very late after they have suffered so much,” he said.
He urged pregnant women to make fellow up and take advice from the doctor.
He also said women should be given nutritious food so that they remain strong possessing enough blood.
