Caltech’s Beckman Mall (Pasadena, CA)
Pioneering cellist Matt Haimovitz puts his 300-year-old cello through the paces during Moving Pictures, part of MUSE/IQUE’s “Summer of Sound” concert series. This outdoor event finds inspiration in the world of cinema — from the intrique of film noir to the silliness of animation. So it only makes sense that Haimovitz, winner of both the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d’Or, should tackle one of the most thrilling pieces of cello music ever featured on the silver screen. The evening also stars Wendie Malick (Dream On, Just Shoot Me!) leading a fresh, humorous presentation of Benjamin Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. The musicians of MUSE/IQUE will also unfurl the work of Elmer Bernstein (Summer and Smoke), Jerry Goldsmith (The Russia House) and Erich Korngold (Deception). Mixing music and images, award-winning composer Peter Golub ends the evening on a high note with the world premiere of his latest work.
