Unofficial and unconfirmed sources have revealed the identity of “devastated” Toronto police officer under investigation regarding the shooting of 18-year-old Sammy Yatim as Const. James Forcillo. After being suspended with pay on Monday, Forcillo is now being actively interrogated by the Special Investigations Unit as it probes the death of Yatim on an empty Dundas streetcar early on Saturday morning. However, no charges have been laid in the case so far.
It was found that almost a decade ago, Forcillo had decided that he wanted to become a police officer. A website of a Toronto gym quotes a James Forcillo, then a Grade 12 student, to be planning on studying law enforcement at a college in the GTA. The queries regarding the officer’s identity were answered by a police source which revealed the name with condition of anonymity on Tuesday, as the Toronto police and the SIU continue their investigation and keep the name a secret.
When asked to comment on the situation while Forcillo was at his home on Tuesday night, he refused to speak to a reporter, saying: “Please respect our privacy.” Forcillo has had an experience of six years on the force, and was now currently assigned as a uniformed officer at 14 Division in the downtown core where the shooting occurred took place, i.e. near Dundas St. W. and Grace St. While refusing to publicly reveal the identity of the officer, Toronto Police Association president, Mike McCormack, stated that “the guy’s distraught,” and “he’s having a tough time with it.”
