Highways Performance Space and Gallery (Santa Monica, CA)

Esther Baker-Tarpaga and Hind Binali created this interactive performance project that challenges audience assumptions about the “American” and “Arab” female body types. The piece explores the cultural differences and similarities by expressing ideas about freedom and oppression, social strata and more. The Moroccan Binali and American Baker-Tarpaga first connected in 2003 at the Dialogue De Corps Festival in Burkina Faso. Choreographer-dancer Binali of Fleur d’Orange has appeared throughout Africa, as has Baker-Tarpaga, who received her MFA and MA in Dance at UCLA’s Department of World Arts and Cultures.
