In a rare tactic adopted by The Conservative Party, it addressed a letter signed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to all eligible voters in the Brandon-Souris byelection, urging them to vote for his party. The letter particularly aims at the Federal Liberal Party, led by Justin Trudeau, and informs voters that Harper needs Conservative candidate, Larry Maguire, as part of his “team in Ottawa.”

A voter from Brandon, Kathryn Giesbrecht, confessed having had received such letter this week and claims that she wasn’t that impressed with the tactic. She mentioned that “I found it insulting. I get this great letter, but I am a university student, and the Conservative candidate couldn’t be bothered to come and talk to me.” Giesbrecht alleged that the letter makes the Conservatives look desperate for votes in the election. She stated that “The Conservatives are scrambling. You are looking at $1, easily $1 to $1.50 per letter,” while pointing out that they were all over her riding. She also raised the question about who paid for the letter, investigating whether the money used came from taxpayer’s money or Conservative Party’s pocket.

This unordinary move is yet another in a series of strange tactics adopted amid the increasingly close byelection, which each party appears desperate to win. Leaders of the NDP, Thomas Mulcair, and Liberals, Trudeau, also personally visited the riding to boost support for their candidates, namely Cory Szczepanski and Rolf Dinsdale. In addition to that, The Conservative party also distributed attack ads aimed at Trudeau’s stance on marijuana and gun laws.
